Explain the difference between mutually exclusive and independent events.

Explain the difference between mutually exclusive and independent events.

1. What is the probability of being born on:
a) February 28?
b) February 29?
c) February 28 or February 29?

2. A patient newly diagnosed with a serious ailment is told he has a 60% probability of surviving 5 or more years. Let us assume this statement is accurate. Explain the meaning of this statement to someone with no statistical background in terms he or she will understand.

3. A lottery offers a grand prize of $10 million. The probability of winning this grand prize is 1 in 55 million (about 1.8×10-8). There are no other prizes, so the probability of winning nothing = 1 – (1.8×10-8) = 0.999999982. The probability model is:

Winnings (X) 0 $10 x 106
P(X = xi) 0.999999982 1.8 x 10-8

a) What is the expected value of a lottery ticket?
b) Fifty-five million lottery tickets will be sold. How much does the proprietor of the lottery need to charge per ticket to make a profit?

4. Suppose a population has 26 members identified with the letters A through Z.

a) You select one individual at random from this population. What is the probability of selecting individual A?
b) Assume person A gets selected on an initial draw, you replace person A into the sampling frame, and then take a second random draw. What is the probability of drawing person A on the second draw?
c) Assume person A gets selected on the initial draw and you sample again without replacement. What is the probability of drawing person A on the second draw?

5. Let A represent cat ownership and B represent dog ownership. Suppose 35% of households in a population own cats, 30% own dogs, and 15% own both a cat and a dog. Suppose you know that a household owns a cat. What is the probability that it also owns a dog?

6. What is the complement of an event?

7. Accidents occur along a 5-mile stretch of highway at a uniform rate. The following “curve” depicts the probability density function for accidents along this stretch:

a) What is the probability that an accident occurred in the first mile along this stretch of highway?
b) What is the probability that an accident did not occur in the first mile?
c) What is the probability that an accident occurred between miles 2.5 and 4?

8. Suppose there were 4,065,014 births in a given year. Of those births, 2,081,287 were boys and 1,983,727 were girls.

a) If we randomly select two women from the population who then become pregnant, what is the probability both children will be boys?
b) If we randomly select two women from the population who then become pregnant, what is the probability that the first woman’s child will be a boy and the second woman’s child will be a boy?
c) If we randomly select two women from the population who then become pregnant, what is the probability that both children will be boys given that at least one child is a boy?

9. Explain the difference between mutually exclusive and independent events.

10. Suppose a screening test has a sensitivity of 0.80 and a false-positive rate of 0.02. The test is used on a population that has a disease prevalence of 0.007. Find the probability of having the disease given a positive test result.

What is the primary distinguishing feature between Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa? For this week’s Forum, respond to the following: What is the primary distinguishing feature between Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa?

Original Question:

For this week’s Forum, respond to the following: What is the primary distinguishing feature between Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa? Review the research findings on societal and familial factors which can contribute to the manifestation and maintenance of these disorders.

Reply to the following response with 200 words minimum. (please make response as if having a conversation, respond directly to some of the statements in below post. This is not providing an analysis of the original post. Respectfully address it and even ask clarifying or additional questions.)

Hi Class,

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are among the most popular eating disorders. Individuals who suffer from anorexia often restrict the amount of food they eat and are very fixated on being thin. As a result of their fixation on being thin, they tend to engage in very abnormal eating habits. On the other hand, bulimia is an eating disorder where individuals tend to overeat or binge then the person would then rid the body of all the food it consumed by purging through laxatives or vomiting. Sadly, some individuals actually suffer from both disorders at the same time. While there is no cure for either anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, but there are treatments that are available that can lead to a full recovery even though ongoing treatment efforts are necessary in order for the person to maintain a healthy life.

Differences Between Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa

There are distinct differences between bulimia and anorexia. The typical age in which one sees the onset of anorexia nervosa is the early teens whereas the onset for bulimia is in the later teen years. In addition, anorexic are often obsessed with being thin which causes them to be quite fixated with weight gain and they are often extremely underweight. On the other hand, individuals with bulimia nervosa are often within the normal weight range but are often physically weak. Interestingly, individuals with anorexia nervosa often have very restrictive diets while individuals with bulimia nervosa sometimes go through periods in which they overeat and would use some measure such as vomiting or laxatives to help purge their bodies of the food. It is also important to note that individuals with anorexia often have to be hospitalized while individuals with bulimia are more unlikely to be hospitalized.

Societal and Familial Factors’ Contribution

Eating disorders are multifaceted conditions that can arise as a result of many reasons; two of these factors include societal and familial factors. These factors have both contributed to eating disorders; however, they are not necessarily the cause the eating disorders. Sadly, today individuals are bombarded with what are accepted standards of beauty and body image. Many celebrities are praised for their physical appearances and as a result, this sets a standard beauty which their doting fans try to emulate on a regular basis. However, as all body types are not the same some individuals do not achieve that desired celebrity look, therefore, they use various methods such as limiting their food intake or purging food from their stomachs. Moreover, if these individuals do not have the strong family social support system, they can easily internalize societal views of beauty and start comparing themselves against these standards. Soon they begin to believe their bodies will only be perfect if they were to look like these individuals. Sadly, based on their obscured perceptions they will never attain this look.

Interestingly, individuals can suffer from an eating disorder as a result of habits that are practiced within their families. Sometimes family member with eating disorders causes other individuals to also have an eating disorder as there are genetic contributions to eating disorders. Moreover, if individuals grow up in households where there are unhealthy eating habits which promote eating disorders, they are more prone to develop an eating disorder themselves.

Question to the Class

If there is no cure for eating disorders, how can a family help their family member who has an eating disorder?

As always I welcome your thoughts.

Christle!
