As you will discover in your readings, there are three rock types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Choose a rock and describe its characteristics, how it formed, and any usage it might have today or had in the past. Once again, make sure that you come up with a choice that hasn’t been discussed already.

Peer Post 1:

Pumice rock is a type of igneous rock, which is formed when a volcano erupts with a very high content of water and gasses (Minerals Education Coalition, n.d.). It is classified as a rhyolite,  a lightweight rock, usually white in color, with glass fragments and voids; which indicates rapid cooling (Lutgens, Tarbuck, & Tasa, 2014).

Pumice is used to make concrete, potting soil, pet litter, industrial cleaners, rubber erasers, and abrasives for personal care (Minerals Education Coalition, n.d.). Pumice stones are used when someone gets a pedicure, or manicure to get the dead, dry skin off of your body. They make your skin feel smooth. I had no idea that pumice was used in erasers, potting soil, industrial cleaners or pet litter.

Peer Post 2:

Nearly 90% of earth’s organic limestone is formed by layers of skeletons of microscopic organisms that once lived in water, (Lutgens & Tarbuck, 2013). This material forms calcium carbonate, also known as calcite. This rock can also form by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from lake or ocean water, and is known as tufa limestone (geology.com).  In addition, inorganic limestone can be found in caves in the form of stalactites and other formations. This occurs through evaporation from water which seeps down through the cave’s ceiling. (Lutgens & Tarbuck,2013). Carbon dioxide evaporates from the water and a small amount of calcium carbonate remains on the ceiling. This is repeated and eventually results in a small icicle-shaped stalactite.  If the water which seeps into the cave, drips on the floor and evaporates there, a small stalagmite growing from the floor could result. This type of limestone is known as travertine. A soft limestone known as coquina, which I have found along some local beaches in South Florida, is made of calcite and includes identifiable shells and shell fragments (facweb.bhc.edu, 2011). Conversely, some limestones are very fine grained and need magnification to identify its tiny structures (gsa.gov, 2016)

Limestone must contain at least 50% calcium carbonate (calcite) by weight. Materials such as quartz, feldspar, silica, clay minerals and others can be included. Fossiliferous limestone contains fossils. Limestone is considered soft and will effervesce in any common acid (gsa.gov, 2016).

Another interesting fact about limestone is that it is sometimes very hard to identify when the grains are very small, and it can easily be confused with various marble types. This can cause problems with maintaining of the building or item made of this material, as it can sometimes be misidentified and result in damage to the resource (gsa.gov, 2016). Limestone is used in building and decoration but the acid in rain can cause dissolution of calcite. Under intense pressure, limestone will undergo metamorphism and will recrystallize to form marble.
