One future concern that I feel is of importance is an increase of cost of healthcare. A large proportion of the U.S. population has been, until recently, uninsured. In addition, deductibles and co-pays are common in the United States for those who do have insurance coverage, and high out-of-pocket expenses make health care services, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies increasingly unaffordable (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2017). With cost of healthcare increasing, this can cause issues for health due to people avoiding healthcare services due to the inability to pay. With living in a low income community, this has always been an issue. People tend to avoid what they cannot afford. The increase costs of everyday needs is something that will also affect this. Seeing my community as it is now, I feel that people of the older generation will lack significantly the medical care they need. I have found that they really notice what things cost and will avoid blood work, necessary treatments, and cannot afford to travel when needing more specific medical care from a bigger community.
Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, play, and age; they affect health outcomes, functioning, and quality of life (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2017). Some of the social determinants of health within our commmuity that would affect our population are the lack of resources, the lack of jobs, decrease in physical activity for our children, and an increase of our older population and healthcare needs. Because of these issues, there is an increase of need for healthcare and healthcare professionals to be hired here. This goes along with the income base of our community. A higher increase of poverty due to lack of job opportunity will increase the rate of people who will be affected by bad health and in turn we do not have the resources we need because it is difficult to find providers to move and treat patients within our area. As I discussed earlier in the semester, the rate of teen pregnancy is very high within our area. Most of our young parents tend to not go to school to receive further education if they even finish high school. This will increase poverty levels and more health issues not only with our children and younger population, also with their parents who do not receive necessary heathcare to maintain their health. The decrease in health awareness within our community is and will most like continue to grow unless we step in and provide more education.
I feel that we can implement population health within our community by increasing the education given to all patients within different areas of nursing. I feel as though we do not educate our younger population as much as we do our middle age population. I feel that there is a large decline of health education in our younger population within our community. I feel that one way we can implement better health outcomes for our younger population would be to increase the responsibility of school nurses. Maybe providing in class teaching, that would be required, would increase the knowledge of our younger population. Teaching self care, health concerns for that population, and a basic understanding of what disease and declining health can “look like” would be a very appropriate appraoch to increase the health of our younger growing population. This can be implemented throughout all age groups and be adjusted where they will be educated and different opportunities to hold events to provide health education to all members of our community.
