1.What are some of the issues involved in an environmental problem of interest to you personally or professionally?

2. At present, the value of the environment for future generations is not well established in our society. Until the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970 (NEPA), American civil society only codified ethics (through laws, regulations, and accepted practice) that focused on the environmental needs of people that currently exist, or have already been conceived. However, there have been several legislated policies that have been used to preserve and conserve resources. Thus, we do have the capability and desire to promote changes in environmental ethics.

Note that long before NEPA, a group of American Indian tribes, the Iroquois Nation, actually established a legal system that required decisions to consider the impact seven generations beyond the current one (e.g., The Seventh Generation Law or the Great Law). Such ethics were very protective of ecosystems and more explicit statements of environmental ethics.

Do you think we should have stricter laws that are designed to stimulate change in environmental ethics? If so, where do we draw the line so that we do not interfere with personal beliefs and desires for use of resources?

5. The reserve book readings indicate some of the concerns about the susceptibility of humans, particularly the young and elderly to environmental hazards. There are currently some efforts to monitor cases and identify “disease clusters” created by environmental hazards (e.g., the Strengthening Protections for Children and Communities From Disease Clusters Act, https://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/sena… ). Do you think such legislation is a good or bad idea? Why?
