Marine Organism Website Review

Site Address: http://www.seabirds.net/seabirdinfonetwork.html

Whose: This site is described as a seabird and shorebird information and conservation “portal.” A portal generally suggests a gateway to other organizations working on different aspects of a similar goal, issue, or topic. In this case, the “portal” unites groups working towards the unified goal of managing, studying, and encouraging populations of birds that depend on the sea to thrive and optimize their growth and reproduction. The available information can enlighten researchers and other interested people as to how some birds depend on the sea for their food, habitat, reproduction, safety, and migratory passage. This site is clearly designed for organizational use and interaction. There is rapid access and smooth availability of an amazing number of scientific databases on seabird and shorebird ecology, biology, taxonomy, diversity, population sizes, reproductive success, biomass, and biogeographic distribution. What a treasure trove!

What: This site brings together a large and diverse international group of researchers. This runs from those trying to save Mediterranean coastlines for birds to ardent individuals facilitating the Global Penguin Society. There is even an area for registering seabird colonies as one way to avoid their inadvertent destruction by developers.

How: I found this site quite readily. Having an interest in migratory seabirds, I typed that into a Google Search.

Who: This web page seems designed for scientists, marine biologists, serious marine biology students, birders, ecotravellers, environmentalists, educators, and planning commissions.

When: The site is very well maintained and does mention portions that are under repair and data that are being double-checked and validated. There is no easily visible date listed but all the news and upcoming meetings are current. I would like to attend and was fascinated to learn about the 8th International Penguin Conference will be held in Bristol in the United Kingdom from 2-6 September, 2013.

Opinion: This website provides a solid view of the best a website can offer scientists and especially observational and census researchers. All data seem freely pooled and most sites linked to this one (Seabird.org) rely on maps and data visualization, names of researchers and their specialties, and contact information. The graphs, maps, and photographs alone make a fascinating afternoon of browsing. There is a successful degree of interlinking and interweaving of organizations and their informational offerings. And, in the spirit of this wonderful blending of interests and background, I think my favorite seabird.org colleagues belong to The Royal Navy Birdwatching Society!
