Annotated bibliographies help a student or professional to review the available resources on a selected topic in order to provide an overview of the research. Annotated bibliographies and abstracts are similar and often confused; however, an annotation can also include in addition to the summary, a critical evaluation of how the research was conducted (University of Wisconsin LaCrosse, n.d.). Additionally an abstract is before an individual article, and an annotation provides a summary of more than one resource. Critical to the usefulness of an annotated bibliography is to provide summaries of research which have different views, and not just the resources which may support the view of the professional. For example if student were looking at the topic of certification of juveniles as adults, summary of research which both supports and opposes certification should be included.

When done correctly, annotations provide a valuable tool to the professional as a wide array of research can be briefly reviewed for its relevance. The annotation also provides the full citation should further review of the research be desired. If an annotated bibliography has been compiled on your topic, it will save a considerable amount of time in both reading and gathering research (Johnson, Rettig, Scott & Garrison, 2015). Should you be conducting a summary for a thesis, writing annotations would help to organize and access information quickly, triggering the memory of what had been read. Finally, writing the annotated bibliography aids the student or professional in succinctly summarizing material, evaluating the work of the researcher, and determining whether it is applicable or valuable to the topic of study (Walden University Writing Center, n.d.).
