Terminology, Posture, and Gait
In your first week and throughout this course you will encounter medical terminology. Medical terminology helps professionals to describe the human body and its components, medical conditions, and functions in a science-based manner. Chapter 1 of your text nicely defines kinesiology, which, broadly described, is the study of movement. For this discussion, you must address both Part I and Part II below in one initial post within the forum.
Part I: Utilize the Medical Terminology video and the U.S. National Library of Medicine Medical Dictionary to address Part I relating to Osteology, Arthrology, Myology, and Neurology.
- Students whose last names begin with N through Z will use their own words to summarize the terms Myology and Neurology. List these terms in the subject line of your post.
Part II: After studying chapters 21 (Posture) and 22 (Gait) select one common postural deviation and one atypical gait. Next, slip into the shoes of a healthcare practitioner, and address the points below as though you are speaking with your patient who is experiencing the selected deviations. Choose a name for your patient and address him or her directly, using applicable medical terminology. Discuss the following:
- Analyze the importance of having good posture.
- Describe the previously selected postural deviation and name one possible cause for this deviation.
- Discuss the previously selected atypical gait and a general cause for this abnormality.
Include two scholarly sources to support your research and findings (one should be your course text). All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA style r. Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words.
Guided Response: Respond to at least two peers. One peer response should be to a student who had to summarize the same terms as you in Part I. The second response should be to a student, who had to define the terms you did not cover in Part I. Evaluate the way your peer worded their definitions and compare your case to their case with regards to the patient with posture and gait issues. Each peer response must contain a minimum of 100 words.
