A quantitative study I would like to research would be how the unemployment rates in my state have affected the crime rates at the city and county levels. Arizona has had an unemployment rate from 3.8% in 2007, up to a peak at 11.2% in 2009 and currently sits at a 6.0% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.). This roller coaster of an unemployment rate could result in equally drastic changes in the levels of crime being committed in the same areas where the unemployment was worst.
Within this study the dependent variable would be the crime rate within the cities and/or counties of Arizona. The independent variable would be the unemployment rates within the same cities and/or counties as the measured crime rate.
In this study, utilizing a quantitative approach would be more benefit for several reasons. One reason would be the accessibility of information from both the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the precise numerical data it provides. Another reason would be the usefulness in obtaining data that allowed quantitative predictions to be made.
On the other side are the disadvantages of using quantitative studies. The study may not reflect the understanding of the constituencies involved in the study. Additionally, the purpose of studies is to gather data and information that would be useful toward a specific goal. The data gathered in quantitative studies may be too abstract and general for the use of local situations of individuals.
