Introduction to Maps

This is a Discussion Post on Introduction to Maps.

Mapmaking has been around for some time. However, it has only been within the last 20 years that technology has had a major impact on mapmaking. Computers, Internet, satellite images, and digitial mapping have created many advances in mapmaking. ArcGIS, the mapping software you will use in this course, has a powerful impact on decisions, communication to audiences, and effectiveness. However, technology alone cannot guarantee good mapping practices. With the technological advances, good mapping principles remain the same, regardless if the map is created on the computer or with traditional pen-and-ink.

  1. Explain how data requirements differ among the different map types in Chapter 1 of your textbook Principles of Map Design. In your explanation include how different audiences would change the data requirements. Include who your audience may be in your field of interest.
  2. Justify why planning is important to the map design process in both computer mapping and traditional pen-and-ink cartography.
  3. Evaluate how choices in the sizes and placement of major map elements can enhance or detract from overall cartographic effectiveness. Provide examples.
