Geographies of Racial and/or Ethnic Identity

All assignments should be:

  • 2 pages minimum, 2-4 pages total (images, bibliographies, etc. do not count
  • toward the number of pages – they should be at the end, on a separate page)

  • Typed
  • Double spaced
  • 1 inch margins
  • Common, 12 point font (Times/Times New Roman/Arial)
  • Prompt: Geographies of Race & Ethnicity (Chapters 2, 3, & 5)

Write about the geography of your ethnic and/or racial heritage, following the

    guidelines below:

  • Watch Video #9 on the YouTube playlist (accessible on the course menu on
  • Blackboard by clicking on “YouTube Playlist”).

Even if you feel you have one single identity, many people can relate to having

hybrid identities or multiethnic families. We often experience the influences of

more than one culture on our own identities, even if we usually only hear

people talking about one race or ethnicity at a time. Note anything the panelists

say that relates to your experience of race/ethnicity OR that raises a question or

issue that you would like to discuss in your essay.

  • Answer the question: How do you identify yourself in terms of race and/or
  • ethnicity and how did this come to be your identity? You are encouraged to

write about where your ancestors came from, how your ancestral origins

influence your own identity, and what your identity means to you. Did you

always have the same understanding of your own identity, or has it changed over

time? How large of an influence is race/ethnicity on your identity?

  • Use at least five vocabulary words from related textbook chapters. Put the words in
  • bold or a bright color. Words should be used in the proper context. You may include

definitions of the vocab, but definitions will not count toward your page total.

  • Make a map (by hand or computer). Make a map showing where your family or
  • your ancestors have migrated over time, ending with you (use arrows). It is okay

to make a somewhat simple map, as long as it reflects what you know about

your history. You are encouraged to go as far back as you can and include as

many different ancestors as you’d like, however there is no minimum number of

people or places to include. Your map should reflect what you know about your

family history. Add relevant information to the margins of the map. Label

relevant countries or cities. If you take a map from the internet, make sure you

have edited it in some way. Give your map a title. Consider adding a key/legend.
